I don't really see myself as a bar person, well, at least not lately. I tend to slump away from most of the closest watering holes just to preserve my sanity. This isn't because I don't love food, because my rolls will tell you otherwise, and it's certainly not that I don't enjoy a good drink, because my fellow yelpers will tell you I drink like a fish when I am out. The truth is, this old lady can not handle the hustle, the bustle, the beard, and the plaid that is our local brew pups. However, The Grain Station is something I can get behind and support five million bazillion percent. I was a little surprised that this place was not packed on a friday. It is directly across the street from UNM, carries solid choices in beer, and has food. It stresses me out because I'm worried not enough people know about this place, but at the same time, it's the perfect spot for an old lady like me. I can't speak for all of the food the Grain Station, but I can speak for the Philly cheesesteak, the french fries, and the german potato salad. I've never actually had a Philly cheesesteak from Philly, but I have had some BAD Philly cheesesteaks from other places. This was not one of them. This sandwich was beautiful, it had melty cheese, onions, peppers, and a sweet sauce on top that made my brain explode. The tastes and textures together were just absolutely perfect. In fact, thinking about it is making me salivate. The french fries were the perfect texture and taste, which you would think would be the easiest thing in the world to perfect, but you would be wrong. The german potato salad was ridiculous. It is lighter than an "american" potato salad, but the textures and tastes were balanced perfectly. I could probably eat a tub of it if someone would let me. The service is WONDERFUL. Seriously. Our server took our order, gave us a timeframe of how long it would take to bring out our dishes, and made sure that we loved everything we were served. I can only hope that I make it back sooner rather than later, and I can also only hope that I have room to try their dessert!
